Lisieux Convent, Darbe, Puttur

Lisieux Convent, Puttur is the first branch house of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany (Bethany Sisters) as well as the first mission station of the congregation established during the year 1925. It was at the pressing invitation from Rev. Fr. Joseph Aloysius Rodrigues, the Parish Priest of Mai De Deus Church, Puttur to the Servant of God, Msgr. Raymond Francis Camillas Mascarenhas, the Founder of Bethany, to teach in the newly established St. Francis Xavier boys school of the Parish. Accordingly three sisters viz. Sr. Lourdes, Sr. Margaret and Sr. Anne, willingly agreed to work in this new place. On 29th May 1925, ‘Lisieux Conevnt was established under the Patronage of St. Therese of Child Jesus, the second patroness of the congregation, who was canonized in the same year 1925, November. Sr. Lourdes one of the pioneer was the first superior of the convent and Headmistress of the school. Sr. Gertrude another pioneer, was a very zealous missionary, who though was a trained teacher, gave up teaching and served the newly converted Tulu Christians of the Parish and became the first missionary of the congregation.


In 1928 Little Flower Girls Hr. Pry. School, Kurnadka was opened for girls. Later in 1985 both these, boys and girls schools were amalgamated and named as “Little Flower Higher Primary School”. On 4th 2003 the school celebrated its Platinum Jubilee when Sr. Arun Savio was the Headmistress and Sr Helen Mary was the Superior and Local Manager. In memory of it “St. Raymond Block” was constructed. Little Flower has given value based education to thousands of boys and girls for the past 95 years. Students of this school have spread all over the world serving in different capacities.

Since the need for a English Medium School was felt by the local people Sr Inviolatha, the Provincial Superior opened Bethany Hr. Pry. School on 1st June 2005. In 2006 it was upgraded to 7th std and continued till S.S.L.C. The Bethany High School got 100% result in S.S.L.C board Exam for10 years.

At present there are ten sisters in Lisieux Convent under the able leadership of Sr. Prashanthi B.S. Sisters teach catechism to the students in the school, Sunday catechism in Mai De Deus Church Puttur, together with neighboring parishes of Maril and Nidpally, preparing the children for various sacraments, attending B.C.C, I.C.Y.M and directing the youth, visiting the sick and elderly in the locality. They actively participate both in pastoral and Educational apostolate.
